Iraq: Who is Abdul Latif Rashid? The Newly Elected President of Iraq

Iraq: Hours after three rockets hit Baghdad’s Green Zone, the Iraqi Parliament selected Kurdish politician Abdul Latif Rashid as the Head the Country, ending a political deadlock.
Prior to a highly anticipated session where parliamentarians pushed through with the formation of the next Government despite the political turmoil, at least nine rockets were fired at the Iraqi Parliament inside the heavily defended Green Zone, the seat of government. There were at least five injuries.
Attacks followed the Coordination Framework, a coalition chaired by al-Maliki and composed primarily of Shiite parties with support from Iran, delivering an official letter claiming to be the largest bloc in Parliament. It appeared that the attacks were an attempt to scuttle the session.

The newly elected President earned 162 votes to win the position

Barham Saleh, a fellow Iraqi Kurd, was displaced as President by the newly elected President following the two-round vote in parliament on Thursday. In comparison to Saleh’s 99 votes, the newly elected President earned 162 votes, according to an assembly official quoted by Al Jazeera. As the results were being counted, it was reported that outgoing president Saleh walked out of the parliament building.

Latif, 78, advised the Head of State after serving as the country’s minister of water resources from 2003 to 2010.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi denounced the attack during the session on Twitter, writing that “we firmly oppose any attempt to hinder the democratic process.”

In order to put an end to the political situation, he declared, “We support the accomplishment of the constitutional deadlines.”
