The war between Israel and Iran has escalated to the extent that what may now be observed is not only a conflict of military forces but an assertion of who controls the region. Iran, having been marginalized and strongly sanctioned, is currently displaying itself as a key player in the Middle East. Iran has challenged the status quo in the world because of its rebellious nature towards pressuring both the United States and Israel.

A recent report regarding the DNP India has indicated that the resistance and retaliation capability of Iran has altered perceptions in the Gulf and also across the world. The increasing power of the countries using such proxy networks, missiles, and regional diplomacy is transforming the balance of powers in the Middle East.

Iran’s Rise: From Resistance to Dominance

Iran has been targeted through economic sanctions and secretive cyber-attacks as well as military pressures, but it is not going to be affected. The way it has punished its opponents by using its allies in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and Iraq is indicative of how deep its strategic roots go. Tehran is no longer a country merely responding in most aspects; it is setting the rules of the game.

What This Means for Gulf Countries

The Gulf states, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar are monitoring the sidelines. Originally dependent on the U.S. and afraid of Iranian intentions, they encounter a new situation. Abraham Accords, which were the result of Arab-Israeli normalization, may find themselves under strain with the reach of influence due to Iran extending across national boundaries. The position of Iran would compel the Gulf countries to face Teheran or tackle Teheran diplomatically in different ways.

Challenge for Israel and the US?

To Israel, increasing assertiveness by Iran is a matter of national security, especially when there is the threat of a nuclear buildup. The United States, conversely, seems to be at a loss about whom to help and whether it plays the role it should in the area. The Middle East is no longer under the traditional reign of Washington since the emergence of Iran.
