Israel-Syria: Syria says Israel launched several missiles targeting Damascus at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday. One Syrian soldier was severely wounded in the attack.
Syria’s official media, SANA says the Syrian Army intercepted several Israeli missiles, Some of those missiles were destroyed.
Israel has been attacking pro-Iran elements in Syria for several years. Syria’s President Bashir al-Assad is supported by Iran.
Israel and Iran have hostile relations between them.
Israel-Syria relations
The two countries have been ins a state of war since the creation of the Jewish nation in 1948. Syria and Israel had armed conflicts in the First, Third and Fourth Arab-Israeli Wars.
Additionally, the two countries had significant military engagements during the Lebanese Civil War, the War of Attrition and the 1982 Lebanese War. The War of Attrition, also known as Harb al-Istinzaf, refers to the conflict between Israel on one side and Egypt, Jordan and their allies on the other side.
The War of Attrition included the Palestine Liberation Organization as one of the adversaries.
Israel and Syria don’t recognize each other as legal entities. Both countries also discourage their citizens from travelling to each other’s territories. An exception is made with regard to the Druze people who live in Golan Heights.

The United Nations considers Golan Heights as Syrian territory which is occupied illegally by Israel.
Iran has a significant presence in Syria and uses the latter’s territory to mount attacks on Israeli territories.
Iran and Israel
Iran was the second Muslim country to recognize the Jewish State of Israel. Both countries had friendly relations during the Pahlavi regime but they worsened after the 1979 revolution.
Today, Iran doesn’t recognize Israel as a legitimate state and uses several terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas to target Tel Aviv.
