Journalist’s Denies To Wear Headscarf Ends Iran President Interview, Details Here

The hijab controversy in Iran has escalated to such an extent that now President Ebrahim Raisi has refused to give interviews to CNN’s female journalists in New York. The condition was placed on their behalf that only if women journalists would wear hijab, then the nobles would interact with them. If the female journalist did not agree to this condition, then this interview did not even take place.

Iran is being criticized on social media for this incident with CNN’s Chief International
Anchor Christian Amanpour. Amanpour was scheduled to have an interview with President Raisi in New York. She was supposed to discuss with Raisi on the ongoing hijab controversy in Iran for the past one week. She had prepared for the interview, but in the meantime the President’s assistant told her that only if you wear a hijab, this interview will be done.

Amanpour was not ready on this condition. The woman journalist said that she is in New York and such rules and conventions cannot apply here. After all, the President did not come for the interview. After this Amanpour tweeted about this incident. She has also shared a picture of herself with a blank placed in front of her for the President.

Raisi is in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly session. During this time this American news channel had planned to interview him. Amanpour, a female journalist of British-Iranian origin, shared the full details of the said incident in a series of tweets. I politely declined Raisi’s assistant’s request to wear a hijab, she said. Told him that we are in New York, where there is no law or tradition for women to wear hijab or scarf. I will not accept this condition. After that we left from there and the interview did not happen.

Last week the hijab controversy in Iran deepened when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in custody. After this massive protests started. Thousands of women took to the streets in Iran to protest against moral policing and the requirement for women to wear the hijab. During this time there were also reports of assault on women who did not wear hijab. The Iranian government has banned Instagram and the Internet in the country due to this movement. An NGO has claimed 31 lives in the violent clashes.
