Kenya Election 2022: William Ruto Declared Winner

Kenya Election 2022: Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto has won the presidential election amidst chaos in the country. He narrowly beat his rival, Raila Odinga, taking 50.49 percent of the vote.

The narrow margin caused flared tensions and protests in his defeated rival’s strongholds after the results were announced.

Odinga accused the head of the electoral body of a “blatant disregard of the constitution”.

“We totally without reservation reject the presidential election results,” he said.

Making his remarks in front of supporters in the capital city of Nairobi, he said that there was “neither a legally elected winner nor a president-elect”.

The 77-year-old long-time opposition leader was running for president for the fifth time. He has challenged the results in the previous two elections, including successfully in 2017.

The drama unfolding between the two top candidates goes further than just this election. Ruto had served as deputy under former President Uhuru Kenyatta since 2013, supporting him in two elections with a promise that he would have the backing of Kenyatta’s vote this year. However, Kenyatta backed Odinga and they fell out after the 2017 election.

Ruto had been a staunch supporter of Odinga during the heavily disputed elections in 2007. The disputes were caused when 1,200 people were killed after political violence sparked ethnic cleansing. Both he and Kenyatta faced charges at the International Criminal Court over the violence, in a case that later collapsed.
