A Pakistan Army officer named Major Moiz Abbas Shah was killed in a fight with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants. Shah was famous for saying that he had caught an Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, in 2019.

The shooting took place on Monday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Pakistani reporter Aditya Raj Kaul says Shah was part of a military raid that went after TTP hideouts. Reports from inside Pakistan reveal that the TTP put up a strong fight against the Pakistan Army during the operation. People on both sides were hurt, including Major Shah.

2019: Balakot Tensions Are Back

A lot of people in Pakistan paid attention to Major Moiz Abbas Shah when he posted pictures on social media after the 2019 air battle between India and Pakistan. He said that he was the one who caught Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman after his MiG-21 Bison was shot down during the tense military situation that followed the Balakot airstrikes.

Further, on March 1, 2019, Abhinandan was sent back to India in what Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan called a "gesture of peace" in response to growing pressure from around the world.

Concerns Are Raised by the Return of TTP

TTP terrorists killing a high-ranking officer like Major Shah is a worrying sign that the terror group is on the rise again in Pakistan. In the past few months, the TTP has attacked the Pakistani military and police more, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

While the military has been trying to stop them, the group still controls parts of the tribal belt and is strong enough to carry out missions. Major Shah's death shows that the Pakistani Army is still fighting the militant uprising within its own ranks.

India Reacts With Caution

Indian defense officials haven't said anything public about it yet, but the situation is being closely watched. The link between Major Shah and the Abhinandan case has started new conversations online. Many people are remembering the tense standoff in 2019 and the brave Indian Air Force pilot's final return.

Is Pakistan on the boil?

Yes, it looks like Pakistan is under a lot of stress from all sides: more terrorist attacks by the TTP, an economy that is falling apart, and a lot of political unrest. Conflicts between the military and civilians happen all the time, and people are getting angrier. The country is in a crisis that threatens its own stability.
