Mark Carney: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney drew a rare standing ovation from corporate and political leaders in the audience after delivering a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
In his powerful speech, the Canadian PM declared that the long era underpinned by the United States of America’s hegemony was done and dusted now. Carney described the present-day political environment polluted by Donald Trump’s obnoxious bullying and tariff tactics has ensured that the old world order is not coming back ever again.
Recently, Donald Trump mocked French President Emmanuel Macron after which Macron blasted the bullying tactics of Trump.
What Did Mark Carney Said?
Mark described the present-day economic environment as a rupture. He urged other middle powers to unite together.
His remarks came as the US President renewed his bullying threats to snatch Greenland from the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump had also warned of fresh tariffs on European countries if they decide to delay or halt its obsession with Greenland.
Carney remarked Canada has prospered under the ruled-based international order for decades. He added Canada benefited from its principles and predictability even though we knew that the entire concept of the order was partially false. Carney added that the strongest would always make it a point to exempt themselves whenever convenient.
Carney Blasts US Antics
The Canadian PM also said Canada as a country, friend and ally participated in the rituals often calling out the innumerable gaps between rhetoric and reality. Carney commented that bargain would no longer work. The Canadian Prime Minister blasted Donald Trump without naming him that greater powers have started using economic integration as weapons, supply chains as vulnerabilities ready to be exploited, financial infrastructure as coercion and tariffs as leverage.
He also remarked that multilateral institutions such as the World Trade Organization and the United Nations are now under serious threat.
Carney added that his government strongly opposes the illogical and absurd tariffs on European and other nations over Greenland. He also added that Canada is championing efforts for building a mutually-beneficial bridge between the European Union and the Trans-Pacific partnership.
