Russia: According to emergency services cited by news agency AFP on Friday, Russian firemen are battling a fire the size of a football field at a retail centre in a Moscow suburb.

Incident in detail

Shortly after 6 a.m. on Friday, the regional office of the Russian Emergencies Ministry alerted emergency personnel to reports of a fire at the Mega Khimki mall in the Moscow region.

By 7:30 am, the fire had spread to an area of about 7,000 square metres. The ministry reported that nine pieces of equipment and at least 30 first responders were on the scene. It also stated that the severity of the fire was evaluated at four out of five. Emergency personnel revealed intentions to employ a firefighting aircraft to assist in putting out the blaze as it expanded.

Although the story quoted local media as claiming that people were inside the building at some point during the fire, there are no reports of injuries. Eyewitnesses told RT Media that the mall’s staff members were quickly evacuated from the building.

Khimki city prosecutor Denis Andreev allegedly arrived at the scene as the prosecutor’s office for the greater Moscow region announced it will begin an investigation into the incident and its trigger.
