Mayor in Mexico marries a crocodile, Here’s why

Mexico: Victor Hugo Sosa, Mayor of Mexico’s San Pedro Huamelula town has merried a female crocodile called Alicia Adriana in a 230 year old ceremony. The ancestral ritual symbolizes a sacred union and peace between the Chontal and Huave Indigenous groups. The reptile is representative of princess girl” in local lore.

Sosa said during the ceremony “I accept responsibility because we love each other. That is what is important. You can’t have a marriage without love… I yield to marriage with the princess girl.”

Ceremony

This marriage ritual has been practiced for 230 years to celebrate peace between the Chontal and Huave Indigenous communities in Central America. The mayor embodying the role of Chontal King wed the crocodile to symbolize union between two cultures.

“We rejoice in the amalgamation of two cultures. The people are content,” Sosa said after the ceremony.

Significance

As per Jaime Zarate of San Pedro Huamelula the ceremony ” allows the sides to link with what is the emblem of Mother Earth, asking the all-powerful for rain, the germination of the seed, all those things that are peace and harmony for the Chontal man,”

After the ceremony he mayor and his reptilian bride danced to the traditional melodies representing a blissful union.
