Mexico: More than 50 Students Poisoned, 3rd Incident in 2 Weeks

Mexico: Up to 57 children may have been poisoned in a remote secondary school in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, according to local officials, according to Reuters. Following the incident, social media users reported that college students had tested positive for cocaine in a private lab.

Cocaine or contaminated food?

The youngsters’ parents, however, believe that their kids may have perished as a result of consuming tainted food or water. One student’s health is still critical, while the others’ are stable.

According to local media accounts, this is the third instance of widespread poisoning at Chiapas schools in the last two weeks.

“57 adolescent kids from the rural Bochil settlement had come at a nearby hospital with signs of poisoning. According to a statement from the Mexican Social Security Institute, all of the students were stable except for one who was sent to a hospital in the state’s capital in a “difficult” situation.
Bochil leaders expressed their displeasure over the incident and claimed they were helping with the investigation of a state prosecutor.
As parents of children gathered at the school’s basketball court to demand explanations from the authorities, the incident fueled their rage. A father claimed that his daughter had been poisoned and tested positive for cocaine at a private lab, along with other students, in a Facebook video.

The state prosecutor’s office reported on Saturday that 15 toxicology tests had been carried out, and all of the results had been negative for illegal drugs.
