Migrant Boat Sinks Off Greece, 50 Missing

Big news coming out of Greece. According to the news agency AFP, a boat full of migrants has sunk in the water here. 50 people are reported missing in this accident. A boat carrying migrants sank in the Aegean Sea off the Greek island of Karpathos. According to the agency, about 29 people present in the boat have been rescued so far. A total of 79 people were on board the boat.

The boat had left Turkey for Italy on Tuesday. This accident happened on the way. The Greek Coast Guard is searching for the wreckage and missing people. Four ships have been deployed in the rescue operation. Apart from this, two Coast Guard patrol boats and a Greek Air Force helicopter are also engaged in relief work.

Coast Guard spokesman Nikos Koklas said in a media statement that Greece often seeks to access a better life in the European Union for migrants fleeing Africa and the Middle East. These people come to Greece via Turkey over the narrow and dangerous sea crossing separating many traditional enemies.

The International Organization for Migration says sixty-four people have died in the eastern Mediterranean since January. On June 19, eight people died from the Greek island of Mykonos, according to the UN migration body. When 108 more people were rescued.
