Modi to receive a 21-gun salute in White House

PM Modi

PM Modi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will receive a 21-gun salute in the White House during his state visit to the U.S.

This would be his first state visit to the United States. His earlier visits to Washington were classified as official or working visits.

In a state visit, the host country-in this case the United States- invites the PM or the President of the other country in a sovereign capacity.

During Modi’s state visit, he would stay in Blair House, the official guest house of the United States for visiting heads of state. Mr Modi would spend 4 days and 3 nights in Blair House.

He would also attend a dinner in the South lawns of the White House, which would be attended by several invitees from the Indian-American community.

The high point of Mr Modi’s visit to the U.S. would be to address a joint session of the Congress. Both parties-the Republicans and the Democrats- consider India as a vital strategic partner.

Meeting several top CEOs is also high on Narendra Modi’s agenda.

Why is India important to the United States?

According to the State Department, in 2021, trade between the two countries reached a record $157 billion. Furthermore, at the end of 2020, Indian investment in the United States totalled $12.7 billion supporting 70,000 American jobs.

India also sends 200,000 students every year to the United States, which contributes $7.7 billion to the American economy.

“Deep relationship”

Ahead of Modi’s state visit, a top U.S. official said it”will be an opportunity to reaffirm the deep and close partnership between the United States and India and the warm bonds of the family and friendship that link America, Americans and clearly, Indians together. And so that’s very important to the (US) President. “
