New Delhi: India and Bangladesh will hold border-related talks in New Delhi from June 11. These talks will continue till June 14.

Both sides are expected to talk on a wide range of issues like cross-border crimes and confidence-building measures. The last border-related talks were held in July 2022 in Dhaka.

On June 11, a 15-member Bangladeshi delegation led by Major General AKM Nazmul Hasan arrived in the Capital. He was warmly received by the BSF Director General Sujoy Lal Thaosen. The four-day talks will be held in the BSF’s facility at Chhawla in southwest Delhi.

What is the meeting about?

A BSF spokesperson said that India and Bangladesh will talk about curbing transborder crimes and sharing information in a timely manner.

Both sides will also discuss the various developmental and infrastructure projects being undertaken on the international border. Indian and Bangladesh will also discuss how to effectively implement the Co-Ordinated Border Management Plan and Confidence Building Measures.

It is noteworthy that both countries share a 4,000-kilometre-long border. The borderline runs through swamps, rivers, jungles, and farms and is difficult to manage effectively.

There are frequent reports of cattle smuggling from India to Bangladesh and infiltration of Bangladeshi immigrants across the border.

PTI reports that between 1971 and 1992, these talks were held annually. Later, India and Bangladesh decided to have border talks on a biannual basis.

India-Bangladesh border relations

Both countries have good border relations and have used border talks to settle any disputes.

In 2015, India amended its Constitution to hand over 7,110 acres to Bangladesh. In return, Dhaka gave away 17,160 acres of land to New Delhi.

India and Bangladesh have also excellent trade relations.

However, some disputes remain between both countries particularly the sharing of river waters of Ganga and Brahmaputra.
