New Zealand: On Wednesday, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin finished their first in-person bilateral meeting in Auckland. While their meeting had some highlights, a question from a journalist during a press conference raised eyebrows for the wrong reasons.

“A lot of people will be wondering, are you two meeting just because you’re similar in age and have got a lot of common stuff there – when you got into politics and stuff – or can Kiwis actually expect to see more deals between our two countries down the line?” the reporter asked during the joint press conference.

This question, asked to Ardern, 42, surprised her. The prime minister of New Zealand responded appropriately to the journalist. “My first question is whether anyone ever questioned Barack Obama or (former New Zealand Prime Minister) John Key if they met because they are the same age?” She shot back.

“We have of course a high percentage of men in politics, it’s reality, and because two women meet it’s not just a matter of their gender,” she explained.

Marin, 37, responded to Ardern’s remark, saying, “We’re meeting because we’re prime ministers.”
