PM Modi UNGA Session: Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, will not be going to the UNGA’s high-level meeting in New York at the end of the month. Sources in the government say that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will instead represent India.
The news comes at the same time that former US President Donald Trump is supposed to speak at the UNGA. Many people had thought that Modi and Trump might meet, but now that Modi isn’t there, that possibility has been ruled out.
Why Modi isn’t going to the UNGA
Even though there has been no official explanation, top officials say that the choice was made because of the Prime Minister’s duties at home and India’s busy diplomatic schedule. Modi has often sent his foreign minister to represent India at international meetings when important issues in India or the region are at stake.
The UNGA session this year is likely to be about problems with global security, unstable economies, and reforms in multilateral institutions. These are all issues that India has constantly brought up on the world stage.
India’s Voice Will Be Led by Jaishankar
The Indian team will be led by Foreign Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who has been a diplomat for a long time. Jaishankar, who is known for being able to clearly explain things and being active in international settings, is likely to stress India’s position on issues like the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the global energy crisis, climate change, and the need for changes to the UN Security Council.
He is also likely to talk about India’s role in keeping the Global South stable, especially since emerging countries are facing more and more economic problems.
Modi and Trump are not going to meet
Because PM Modi isn’t there, there won’t be any bilateral talks with Donald Trump, who is still a major figure in US politics and is set to speak at the UNGA debate.
Some people thought that a possible meeting between Modi and Trump could have been a chance to strengthen ties between India and the US, especially since Washington and New Delhi are continuing to work together more on defence, technology, and trade. But officials have made it clear that ties between the two countries are still strong and will continue to move forward through normal diplomatic channels.
India’s Strong Global Ties Remain Intact Despite PM Modi’s Absence from in UNGA Session Absence
Some people may be disappointed that Modi didn’t go to the UNGA because they were hoping for a high-profile meeting, but government officials stress that India’s international outreach is still strong. Later in the year, based on schedules and priorities, there should be more chances for leaders to work together with the US and other partners.
