North Dakota: On Monday (local time), Republican Governor Doug Burgum signed legislation outlawing abortion throughout pregnancy, with a few narrow exceptions up to six weeks’ gestation. As a result, North Dakota now has one of the harshest anti-abortion laws in the nation. In those early weeks, only rape, incest, or medical emergencies like an ectopic pregnancy would qualify for abortion.
13 states currently have laws prohibiting abortion at any stage of pregnancy
After the US Supreme Court ruling that erased women’s constitutional right to an abortion and transferred regulation of the practise to state governments, Democratic governors in at least 20 states this year established a network to improve access to the surgery. Multiple state laws restricting or outlawing abortion have been enacted as a result of the US Supreme Court decision last year overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade judgement that made the practise legal nationally. Several faced legal obstacles. At least 13 states currently have laws prohibiting abortion at any stage of pregnancy, while others are on hold due to court orders.

The Only Clinic where abortion is still allowed
Abortion clinics are no longer available in North Dakota. The Red River Women’s Clinic, the only clinic in the state, relocated its operations this summer from Fargo to Moorhead, Minnesota, where abortion is still allowed. The owner of the clinic is still trying to have the previous abortion restriction in North Dakota declared unconstitutional. The bill was rejected by the Democratic Representative Liz Conmy, who expressed her hope that Burgum would not sign it.

Law Facing Critics and Support
Although the North Dakota law is intended to go into effect right away, the state’s Supreme Court decided last month that a previous prohibition must remain in place while a lawsuit challenging its constitutionality is ongoing. Last week, lawmakers declared their intention to enact the most recent legislation as a statement to the state’s highest court that North Dakotans support abortion restrictions. The law that was approved on Monday, according to its supporters, safeguards every human life, while its critics claim it will have terrible repercussions for women and girls. The most recent state legislation was proposed by Edinburg-based Republican Senator Janne Myrdal. In an interview, Myrdal stated that North Dakota has ‘always been pro-life and believed in valuing the moms and children both. We’re grateful and pleased that the governor upholds that value.’
