North Korea test fires new solid-fuel long-range missile

North Korea claimed on April 14 that it had successfully test-launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile using solid propellants. If this claim is true, it may give the nation access to a more difficult-to-detect weapon that could be used to attack the mainland United States.

The information was released by North Korea’s official news agency, Korean Central News Agency, a day after the neighbours of the country reported witnessing Pyongyang launch a long-range missile, continuing a string of military shows that have included more than 100 missiles thrown into the ocean since the year 2022.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch from a location

According to KCNA, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch from a location nearby. He described the missile, known as the Hwasong-18, as the most potent piece of his arsenal of nuclear weapons and said it would improve North Korea’s capacity for counterattack against external threats brought about by the military activities of the United States and its regional allies.

In order to “constantly strike extreme uneasiness and horror” in his competitors and make them regret their poor decisions, Mr. Kim vowed to increase the size of his nuclear weapons.

The growing military exercises between the United States and South Korea, which the North Korea denounces as invasion drills while using them as an excuse to advance its own weapons development, have been used as the justification for North Korea’s weapons displays.

The Hwasong-18, Mr. Kim continued, would swiftly improve North Korea’s nuclear response posture and support a strong military approach that aims to sustain “frontal confrontation” with its adversaries.
