North Korea’s spy satellite crashes into the sea after takeoff

North Korea’s state-run media KCNA reported on Wednesday, May 31 that its spy satellite has crashed and fallen into the sea. This launch attempt was the first since 2016 and the sixth overall.
KCNA also reported that engine failure and the instability of the fuel caused this crash. According to the media agency, “the launched new satellite transport rocket ‘Cheollima-1’ crashed into the West Sea of Korea as it lost momentum due to abnormal start-up of the two-stage engine after one step separation while flying normally.”
North Korea has vowed to look into this crash and launch another satellite into space. President Kim Jong Un has made developing a spy satellite a priority for his country.

United States opposes satellite launch

The US had opposed the launch of this spy satellite. It said usually such satellites were installed with ballistic missile technology, and thus this launch violated numerous UN agreements.
North Korea is a member of the United Nations.
Meanwhile, South Korea says it has located an object which may be a part of the failed satellite. A top South Korean military official told media that “at around 08:05 today, our military identified an object presumed to be part of North Korea’s claimed ‘Space Launch Vehicle’ in waters 200km (124 miles) west of Eocheong Island and is salvaging it.”
