The United State is currently on a vaccination drive and has vaccinated over 1 million people against the coronavirus infection, the reports suggested. The country began its first phase of vaccination on December 14 and in the first 10 days of its campaign, approximately 1.2 million people were administered with the covid-19 shots.
The Unites States is the only country in the world to have two authorised vaccines against the covid-19 pandemic which has claimed hundreds of thousands lives around the world.
The country first approved Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine candidate while recently, Moderna was given the green light, too.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Robert Redfield was quoted by CNN as saying, ” The US achieved an early but important milestone today – jurisdictions have now reported that more than one million people have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine since administration began 10 days ago.”
“With cases of COVID-19 continuing to surge nationwide, this achievement comes at a critical time and will help to protect those on the frontlines — our healthcare providers treating COVID-19 patients — as well as our most vulnerable: elder individuals living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities,” he added.
In the first phase, healthcare workers around the country who have been tirelessly working amid the pandemic were given the vaccine shots. Apart from them, essential service workers and vulnerable groups are also expected to be receive the vaccine.
Meanwhile, US high officials, including Vice president Mike Pence, President-elect Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden have also been vaccinated with the first dose. According to Biden’s transition team, Vice-president elect Kamala Harris is also expected to administer the vaccine next week.
The US government has said it intends to distribute 20 million first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines in the coming weeks. So far, about 9.5 million doses have been distributed across the country.
Notably, both the vaccines follow two-shot regime with one shot injected after a few weeks of first shot.
