People are angry at the leaders of Pakistan because they nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize and then said bad things about him the next day for bombing Iranian nuclear sites.
They are mad at the government and making fun of it because they think the quick change has made the country look bad in front of the rest of the world. Pakistan recently said that Trump's role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan was "historic," and they said that he was a healer that the whole world should praise.
Even though things were already tense in the Middle East, the U.S.'s precise attack on Iran's nuclear sites made things worse. The attack was quickly criticized by Islamabad, which said it was an act of aggression and against international law.
People and politicians are angry about it
People, opposition groups, and government leaders were all very angry about the move.
A high-level politician called it "tone-deaf diplomacy" when he told the government in public to withdraw Trump's nomination. On social media, people in Pakistan used the hashtags #TrumpNotForPeace and #ShameOnGovt a lot. Someone asked, "How can there be such a drastic shift from receiving theNobel Peace Prize to advocating for bombs in just 24 hours?" What kind of diplomacy is this?"
Leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf(PTI) spoke out against the choice as well. They said they were with Iran and criticized the US for going to war without talking to anyone else first.
A Bad Move in Foreign Policy?
Some experts think that the government may have thought that making Trump look good would help its political cause more than it did. One expert on foreign affairs said, "The administration failed to gauge public sentiment, which remains deeply skeptical of U.S. involvement in Muslim countries."
A lot of people now believe that the Nobel Prize choice was more of a short-term strategy than a long-term foreign policy.
What's Next?
More and more political leaders want the nomination to be thrown out right away and want Pakistan's foreign policy to be looked at again. The government needs to keep its reputation, both at home and with its closest Muslim allies.
What all the fuss is about shows that you can't just ignore how people feel. Pakistan will have to find a way to keep its own values and the goals of other countries in mind as it joins more international groups.
