Pakistan: Major Setback to Shahbaz Sharif after Imran Khan’s Party Wins Majority in By-election

Pakistan: In the by-elections, Imran Khan’s PTI ran candidates for three seats in Punjab and seven seats in the National Assembly. In Mardan, Charsadda, Faisalabad, Nankana Sahib, and Peshawar, it gained six seats in the National Assembly. Imran Khan, the leader of the PTI, handed the ruling coalition a humiliating loss in each of these seats. The biggest opposition group reportedly won two of Punjab’s three legislative seats. With this triumph, PTI has improved its standing in the biggest province.

Will Pakistani politics alter as a result of this defeat?

With Imran Khan’s significant victory, internal strife in Shahbaz Sharif’s party has begun. This is viewed as a significant defeat for Shahbaz’s coalition administration.

Polling took place in the following districts: NA-22 Mardan-III, NA-24 Charsadda-II, NA-31 Peshawar-V, NA-108 Faisalabad-VIII, NA-118 Nankana Sahib-II, NA-157 Multan-IV, NA-237 Malir-II, NA-239 Korangi, and Karachi-I. However, Multan and Malir-II constituencies, which PTI had won in 2018, disappointed Khan’s party.

Due to this victory, PTI leaders are very ecstatic.

Imran Khan, a former cricketer, ran for seven of the eight seats. He hit a big six by capturing six seats, creating significant history in Pakistani politics. The leaders of Imran’s party, encouraged by the victory, reaffirmed their call for early elections in the nation. Imran Khan, who lost his position as prime minister in April of this year, has repeatedly called for early elections. He held numerous sizable protests during this time in an effort to overthrow the Shahbaz Sharif administration. Imran’s victory has caused significant alarm for Shahbaz Sharif’s coalition government.
