In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has authorised the Pakistani military to launch retaliatory action in response to India’s recent counter-terror offensive—Operation Sindoor.

The announcement comes just hours after viral footage showed a Pakistani anchor breaking down on live TV, emotionally reporting the aftermath of the strikes that targeted terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Government sources in Islamabad confirm that Sharif held an emergency meeting with top military leadership, including Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir, where intelligence briefings and potential response strategies were discussed. In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, Sharif said, “Pakistan will not remain silent if its sovereignty is challenged. Our armed forces are fully capable of defending the homeland.”

Operation Sindoor: A Quick Recap

Launched by India as a response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor was a joint military offensive by the Army, Air Force, and Navy, aimed at dismantling nine terror camps affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Hizbul Mujahideen.

Sources claim the operation caused “heavy damage” to terror infrastructure, leading to panic and emergency preparedness across Pakistani military installations.

Strategic Implications

Analysts view Sharif's green light as an attempt to project strength and avoid domestic criticism amid growing pressure from opposition parties and the public. However, defense experts have warned that retaliation could lead to a dangerous cycle of escalation, with both nuclear-armed nations on high alert.

Meanwhile, India has placed its border forces on heightened vigilance, with additional surveillance deployed in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab sectors.

The international community, including the United Nations, is reportedly monitoring the situation closely, with calls for restraint likely to follow in the coming hours.
