Palestine-Israel conflict: The Palestine-Israel war theatre turned bloodier when Israeli forces upped the ante and launched air raids on Lebanon at dawn on Friday. The air raids came hours after it struck Gaza following a spate of rocket launches after clashes at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque on Wednesday.
According to reports, the Israeli police launched an attack on the mosque premises during prayers and even attacked worshippers in the process. It hit Palestinians too, which escalated threats of intense clashes in the area.
Tensions which had built up as a result of police raids at Al-Aqsa mosque, didn't die down. As a fallout of the rocket attacks on Thursday, Israel media showed smoke billowing in the northern Israeli border town of Shlomi. At the same time, the Israeli airport authority announced suspension of operations in Haifa and Rosh Pina.
Netanyahu promises aggressive revenge
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, in a video statement, promised aggressive revenge on his country's "enemies". And hours later, ground-breaking blasts rocked different parts of Gaza.
"Israel's response, tonight and later, will extract a significant price from our enemies," Benjamin Netanyahu said. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) targeted terrorist infrastructures belonging to Hamas in southern Lebanon.
In another statement, the Israeli military said it struck Hamas in southern Lebanon and locals at Rashidiyeh refugee camp reported three loud blasts.
Lebanon launches biggest rocket attack
It may be noted that Lebanon's rocket attack is seen as one of the biggest since 2006 when Israeli forces had clashed with Hezbollah forces. “Israeli forces claimed 34 rockets were fired from Lebanon, of which, 25 had been intercepted by the air defence system.
An initial inquiry identified 34 rockets fired from Lebanon into Israel.”
As many as 25 rockets were intercepted by the IDF Aerial Defense Array, while 5 landed in Israeli territory. 4 additional launches are under review. Lebanon's PM Najib Mikati issued a strong statement condemning military offensives from its territory. Israeli defence experts were quick to point out that the attack was not carried out by any other outfit, but by Lebanon's army.
