In a surprising turn of events, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has announced its nomination of Shehbaz Sharif as the prime ministerial candidate instead of the party’s chief, Nawaz Sharif. This decision comes amidst uncertainty following the recent general elections in Pakistan.
Background of Pakistan Election Uncertainty
Despite the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party winning the most seats in the February 8 elections, none of the major parties, including PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), secured enough seats to form a government independently. This has led to a hung Parliament and speculation about the composition of the next government.
PML-N’s Nomination of Shehbaz Sharif
PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed the nomination in a tweet, stating, “Nawaz Sharif has thanked the political parties which provided support to the PML-N (in forming the upcoming government) and expressed hope that through such decisions Pakistan will come out of crises.” This announcement follows Nawaz Sharif’s decision to nominate his younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif, as the prime ministerial candidate, with his daughter Maryam Nawaz being nominated for the position of chief minister of Punjab province.
Support and Cooperation Among Parties
The announcement comes after PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari withdrew from the prime ministerial race and declared support for Nawaz Sharif without actively participating in the new government. Additionally, the PML-N reportedly enjoys the backing of the powerful Pakistan Army.
PTI’s Response and Legal Challenges
Meanwhile, PTI leader Imran Khan has rejected the idea of forming a coalition government with PML-N, PPP, and MQM, labeling them as “biggest money launderers.” However, PTI faces setbacks as Pakistani courts dismissed petitions filed by PTI-backed candidates challenging the victory of PML-N leaders in the elections.
