At the end of a historic two-day state visit to Ghana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the level of their relationship to a full-fledged "comprehensive strategic partnership". In 30 years, this is the first time an Indian prime minister has been to Ghana.
A double win: trade, defence, digital, and health care
At a press conference at Jubilee House with Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama, Prime Minister Modi set a big goal: to double yearly trade from about $9 billion to $18 billion in just five years. Modi also said again that Indian companies have already put almost $2 billion into 900 projects in areas like industry, healthcare, agriculture, and fintech.
Fintech cooperation: India offered its knowledge of digital payment systems like UPI to help Ghana drive for financial inclusion, which is one of the most important deals that made this goal a reality.
A defence relationship that includes training programmes and the donation of equipment to help Ghana improve its maritime and anti-terrorism capabilities.
Working together on vaccines and healthcare, such as supporting Ghana's plan to build a regional hub for vaccine production.
Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs): traditional medicine, society, and standards
During the visit, four important Memoranda of Understanding were signed to strengthen partnerships between different areas:
-
A program for cultural exchange that encourages art, dance, music, writing, and heritage to mix with each other.
-
A deal between the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Ghana Standards Authority to certify and check the quality of goods together.
-
Cooperation in traditional medicine with the goal of doing studies, training, and exchanging ideas with each other.
-
Setting up a bilateral Joint Commission Meeting to make it official that deals will be reviewed and carried out on a regular basis.
Security partnership and support for the Global South
Modi and Mahama also talked about how global threats like terrorism are getting worse. They agreed to share more information, hold more joint military exercises, and work together to fight terrorism. India made it clear that it still supports Ghana's plan to become a hub for making vaccines. This is part of India's larger plan to improve food and health security.
On the world stage, Modi made it clear that India strongly supports Africa's increased participation. He welcomed the African Union's membership as a permanent member of the G20 while India was in charge.
A national award was given to honor friendship
President Mahama gave PM Modi the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, which is one of the country's greatest civilian honors, because he has worked hard to help Ghana grow and strengthen its friendship with India.
Why it's important
India is making a strategic shift towards engaging with Africa, which will be based on strong political outreach and economic diplomacy. The partnership could give both economies a boost by aiming to double trade, build strong military ties, and export India's strengths in fintech and health care.
For Ghana, these deals mean higher industrial standards, more secure food and vaccines, and more money and technology coming in. At the same time, India gets a strategic ally in West Africa, a region that is becoming more important in world politics.
With this much dedication, both countries are building strong multi-sectoral bases for long-term strategic cooperation, which is typical of current South–South collaboration models.
