US-China relations

US-China relations: In a latest controversy, US President Joe Biden has called his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping a 'dictator'. This development comes a day after US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken concluded his visit to China, undertaken to improve deteriorating Sino-US relations. The President made the remark during a fundraising event in California on Tuesday. The controversy has broken out at a time when relations between two superpowers are at a historic low. A report by Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV said during closed door negotiations between Blinken and Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang, Qin told Blinken that relations between the United States and China “are at the lowest point since the establishment of diplomatic relations."

Joe Biden remarks comes at a critical juncture

It is still unclear why Joe Biden made the remarks against his Chinese counterpart. He made the comments in reference to shooting down of Chinese spy balloon by the US military in February. "The reason why Xi Jinping got upset, in terms of when I shot that balloon down with two box cars full of spy equipment in it, was he didn't know it was there," Joe Biden said on Tuesday. He further added "That's a great embarrassment for dictators. When they didn't know what happened." During his visit Blinken also met Xi Jinping, both leaders agreed to stabilize the intense rivalry between Washington and Beijing, so it did not veer into conflict. Joe Biden had eariler hailed Biden's visit by stating progress has been made. President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet Prime Minister of India tomorrow and China will be one of the central topics of discussion between two leaders.

Chinese Response

China's foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has described Biden' comment as "extremely absurd and irresponsible." The ministry has also accused US President with “political provocation.” Expressing China’s strong dissatisfaction, foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Biden’s comments seriously violated facts, diplomatic protocol and China’s political dignity. The spokesperson also reiterated China’s previous explanation regarding balloon's movements in February saying passage of the balloon through U.S. airspace was unintended and caused by circumstances not under their control.
