Ramchandra Paudel of Nepali Congress has been elected as the President of Nepal. In the presidential election, he was the supported candidate of the eight-party coalition led by Prime Minister Pushpakmal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. He defeated his opponent Subhash Chandra Nembwang by a big margin in the match.
Giving information about the election results, the Nepal Election Commissioner said on Thursday that Ram Chandra Poudel secured 33,802 electoral votes, while his rival Subhash Chandra Nembwang (69) had to be content with 15,518 votes. Paudel got the votes of 214 MPs and 352 provincial assembly members from a coalition of eight parties, including the Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre). In this election, from the very beginning, Paudel’s upper hand was being considered because he had the support of 8 parties supporting the ruling party.
The alliance led by ‘Prachanda’ was overshadowed
Following the political controversy over his support to Poudel in the presidential election, former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma-led CPN-UML had withdrawn its support to the current government. CPN-UML is the second largest party in Nepal. Nembang was the presidential candidate from the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML). Nembang could not garner as much support as Paudel and the alliance led by ‘Prachanda’ was overwhelmed.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2022 general elections. He has also served as Deputy Prime Minister and Speaker of the House of Representatives in Nepal. He is basically Nepali. He completed his studies from Tribhuvan University. MA in Literature. He is the only brother of four sisters.
Sher Bahadur Deuba congratulated for the victory
Nepali Congress chief Sher Bahadur Deuba has congratulated Paudel on his election as the President. Sher Bahadur Deuba tweeted on Thursday evening, ‘Hearty congratulations to my friend Ram Chandra Poudel on being elected President. Paudel (78) and Nembang (69) had filed papers for the election last month. The polling was conducted by the Election Commission at the Parliament House in Naya Baneshwar, Nepal.
Current term ending this month
According to the Constitution of Nepal, the tenure of the President will be 5 years from the date of election and a person can be elected to this post only for two terms. The tenure of Nepal’s current President Vidya Devi Bhandari will end on March 12. Experts of Nepal’s politics say that the post of the President in the country is largely formal, but due to the discretionary powers given by the Constitution, interest in the political parties of Nepal had increased significantly in recent times for this post.
