‘Reflects colonial mindset’ says India on European Parliament’s Manipur resolution

Manipur resolution

Manipur resolution: India has reaffirmed that Manipur is a “internal matter” in response to the European Parliament’s adoption of a resolution on India’s human rights situation, which made specific mention of recent confrontations in Manipur. The action was “unacceptable” and reflected a “colonial mindset,” according to the foreign ministry.

The resolution was passed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day trip to France got underway. He is the honorary guest of the nation’s Bastille Day parade.

“We have seen that the European Parliament held a discussion on developments in Manipur and adopted a so-called Urgency Resolution. Such interference in India’s internal affairs is unacceptable, and reflects a colonial mindset,” foreign ministry spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi said.

“Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order. The European Parliament would be well advised to utilize its time more productively on its internal issues,” he added.

Manipur issue is internal to India

India stated its point of view in advance of the European Parliament’s discussion of the Manipur crisis. It has been made plain to EU parliamentarians, according to foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra, that it is an issue that is “absolutely” internal to India.

At the French Parliament in Strasbourg, a motion titled “India, the situation in Manipur” was approved. According to the resolution, the European Parliament, there has been violence in Manipur, “Strongly urges the Indian authorities to take all necessary measures and make the utmost effort to promptly halt the ongoing ethnic and religious violence, to protect all religious minorities, such as Manipur’s Christian community”.

It said it “encourages India’s central government and all political actors and religious leaders to take urgent steps to restore calm and ensure an inclusive dialogue involving civil society and the affected communities”.

In addition, it requested that the illegal Armed Forces Special Powers Act be repealed and that impartial investigations into acts of violence be permitted.

Since May, Manipur has been the scene of ethnic confrontations that have claimed the lives of more than 80 individuals. Conflicts erupted on May 3 following a rally of tribal members against Meiteis’ desire for Scheduled Tribe recognition.
