Rocket attacks near parliament in Iraq’s capital Baghdad. It is being told that nine rockets have been fired one after the other near the parliament building, in which some Iraqi army personnel have been injured. According to a statement issued by the Iraqi army, these attacks have been carried out in the Green Zone, where the government building and the foreign mission building are located. The army said that the attacks took place at a time when the Parliament session for the election of the President was about to begin. The army has told without any information that some security personnel have been injured in the attack.
Though no one has claimed responsibility for the attack on Parliament House. Similar attacks were also made last month, when the Parliament session was organized for the election of the Speaker. There have been several attacks in the past few years around the Iraqi parliament building.
Recent years have seen an increase in such attacks. It is believed that such attacks are carried out at the behest of Iran. Pro-Iranian fighters carry out such attacks to target the West. However, the army has not commented on the recent attack.
However, soon after the rocket attack, the Parliament session has been called, where the process of election of the President is to be completed. There has been political turmoil in the country for the past several months. Even after the election of the President, the government could not be formed. A year earlier, Shia Muslim leader Moqtada al-Sadr had won the biggest victory in the election, but was unable to form a government due to protests from opposition parties. His supporters had also captured Parliament in the past and he was seen having a picnic inside the Parliament itself. However, later after his appeal, his supporters vacated the Parliament House.
