Ruling-party MP killed in Sri Lanka clashes: Report

MP from Sri Lanka’s ruling party died Monday following a clash with anti-government protesters. News agency AFP quoting local police confirmed the death of P Amarakeerthi Athukorala, as dozens were wounded in violence spreading throughout the island nation.

Athukorala reportedly opened fire and critically wounded two people blocking his car in Nittambuwa, and was later found dead after trying to take refuge in a nearby building.

The development comes even as Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned amid the island nation’s worst economic crisis since independence that has led to widespread protests.

The Rajapaksa loyalists had earlier in the day destroyed tents and placards of anti-government demonstrators camping outside the official residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa since April 9.

In violence in the capital Colombo, at least 138 people were wounded and admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, a spokeswoman for the hospital said.
