Russia Blames Ukraine for Nuclear Plant Attacks

Russia accused Ukraine of attacks on its Zaporizhzhia atomic power plant on Monday, warning against “catastrophic consequences” for Europe.

“The shelling of the territory of the nuclear plant by the Ukrainian armed forces is a potentially extremely dangerous activity… fraught with catastrophic consequences for a vast area, including the territory of Europe,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The Kremlin spokesperson also called on Ukraine’s allies, urging them to use their influence and power to prevent such “shelling” in the future.

Moscow and Kyiv have both blamed each other for strikes on the atomic power plant, where recent fighting caused the UN to issue a warning of potential nuclear disaster.

Zaporizhzhia is Europe’s largest atomic power complex. It was occupied by Russia early in its offensive. In the past few months, the plant has been the scene of military strikes that have damaged several structures, even forcing the shutdown of a reactor.
