Russia Ukraine: Loud explosions once again heard in Kyiv; 137 killed

Explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv early on Friday as Russian forces pressed on with a full-scale invasion that resulted in the deaths of more than 130 Ukrainians in the first full day of fighting and could eventually rewrite the global post-Cold War security order.

After using airstrikes on cities and military bases, Russian military units moved swiftly to take on Ukraine’s seat of government and its largest city. Ukrainian leaders pleaded for help as civilians piled into trains and cars to flee, and hotels in Kyiv were being evacuated amid indications of further assault.

Visuals of destruction flooded social media as world leaders expressed horror and made urgent appeals of restraint and calm. Over 1,700 were detained in Russia amid huge protests against the war on Kyiv.

On Day-1, Russia targeted government and military installations in Ukraine as the attack quickly escalated forcing Kyiv to close airspace – satellite images from Europe showed what seemed like a big hole above Ukraine as other nations saw business as usual.

Ukraine lost control of Chernobyl Power Plant, the site of the 1986 disaster. The White House said it has credible reports that hostages were held at the nuclear power plant.
