Russia Ukraine War: Ukrainian claims early success in its counteroffensive

Russia Ukraine War: Ukraine says it has reoccupied two villages during its counteroffensive on the Russian positions in eastern Donetsk.

Ukrainian forces posted videos showing them planting flags in Blahodatne and Neskuchne-villages in the eastern Donetsk region.

A Ukrainian military commander Valeryi Shershen told a TV channel “We're seeing the first results of the counter-offensive actions, localized results.”

Reuters reports that Ukraine’s Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar has claimed that the Ukrainian Army has “de-occupied” Makarivka in the south. The minister also said the forces had advanced upto 1,500 metres in the southern front.

"No positions were lost in the directions where our forces are on the defensive," Malia added on Telegram.

Reuters says it is unable to verify these claims.

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Vladomyyr Zelenskyy said he was positive about the counteroffensive on Russian positions.

Russia says it is repelling Ukrainian attacks on its positions.

Why is Donetsk important?

The Donetsk region is important for both countries for two important reasons.

It is rich in coal reserves and is also a key transport hub. By occupying Donetsk, Russia has denied strategic advantages to Kyiv.

On the other hand, Ukraine wants this territory back and has launched a counteroffensive to regain Donetsk or Donbas.

Russia- Ukraine conflict so far

Thousands have been killed in this conflict which began with the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 222, 2022.

Russia accuses Kyiv of joining NATO, which is an anti-Moscow military coalition. Russia also has accused Ukraine of acting against the Russian-speaking inhabitants in eastern Ukraine.

Currently, Moscow occupies roughly 18% of Ukrainian territory in the east and southeast.

In the past few months, Ukraine has received several billions of dollars’ worth of military assistance from the United States, Germany and other Western countries. Kyiv is using these arms against Russia in its counteroffensive.
