US President Donald Trump has waived some of the US sanctions and tariff actions against nations that buy Russian oil and gas. The wilful act saved such countries from the hassle of slapping additional tariffs up to 100%. The new measure was to have come into force today, October 16, 2026, just a few hours from now.

Why Did Trump Lift the Russian Oil Sanctions?

The Trump administration announced the waiver would serve the national interest of the United States. Increased fuel prices and worries over fuel supplies have put additional pressure on Washington to keep access to world markets open. The waiver comes less than a week after the United States approved Russian diesel flows to third country markets.

How Would the 100% Tariffs Have Worked?

The law signed in September 2026 allowed tariffs of up to 100 percent on imports from the top consumers of Russian oil and gas, as well as a handful of other nations known to assist Russia in bypassing sanctions. The tariffs were meant to ramp up the economic pressure on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. Trump’s new order suspends the provisions until they can be enforced.

What’s in store for India from this decision?

India and the US, two of the world’s biggest importers of Russian crude, could be a reprieve from the threat of the extra tariff. It might also help to reduce the heat in Indian-US trade talks but it doesn’t settle the dispute over energy imports and sanctions policy altogether.

Why Is Trump’s Decision Facing Criticism?

The waiver has also attracted opprobrium from US members of Congress, who believe that reducing pressure on Moscow could undermine efforts to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Energy-price affordability and the US economy, in general, might have persuaded supporters of the waiver to soften the US sanctions on Moscow.

What Happens Next?

The waiver will stay in place until Trump or another administration official decides it is time for more action. Countries and markets will be watching to see if the administration keeps the exemption on hold or takes additional steps as it weighs its stance toward Russia, the price of energy and trade with leading oil importers.
