Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman Named As New Prime Minister

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the biggest leader of the Arab world, will now be called the new Prime Minister of the country. Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdul Aziz has named his son and successor Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as the new Prime Minister of the Kingdom and his second son Prince Khalid as Defense Minister. This information has been received in a royal order on Tuesday. The reshuffle also includes another son of the Saudi king, Prince Abdul Aziz bin Salman, who has been made the country’s energy minister.

According to the official news agency SPA, King Salman has announced several new posts in the royal decree.

Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Finance Minister Mohamed Al-Jadaan and Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih will remain in their posts, Reuters reported.

MBS (Mohammed bin Salman) has been promoted from Defense Minister to Prime Minister. He is the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia and is seen as the greatest leader of the Gulf countries. Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, is a major US ally in the Middle East.

A Saudi official said MBS’s new role as prime minister would include representing Saudi Arabia on foreign tours and presiding over the country’s conferences. MBS’s younger brother and former Deputy Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman has now been made the country’s Defense Minister. According to the report, the Crown Prince said that the country has increased its self-sufficiency in military industries from 2 per cent to 15 per cent and plans to reach 50 per cent under the new Defense Minister.


According to the royal order, King Salman will still preside over the cabinet meetings he will attend. He was seen presiding over the weekly cabinet meeting on state TV. The custodian of Islam’s holiest sites, King Salman, 86, became ruler in 2015 after two-and-a-half years as crown prince. In the last two years, he has had to be hospitalized several times due to different ailments.
