Shark Encounters Shake New York Beaches, Swimmers Attacked off Long Island Coast

New York Beaches

New York Beaches: A day after two other swimmers reported being attacked while enjoying the sea at well-known New York beaches, two swimmers were reportedly attacked by sharks off the coast of Long Island on Tuesday (local time). After officials reported that drones had seen almost 50 sand sharks that morning close to a well-liked beach area, at least one beach postponed opening to holiday revellers on Tuesday. Swimmers were warned to stay close to the shore when the beach reopened. Long Island State Parks Regional Director George Gorman told Newsday, “We want to make sure swimmers are safe. After a probable shark sighting, the beach was once more blocked, but officials later concluded that it was only a dolphin.

Heightened Safety Measures Implemented After Recent Wave of Shark Attacks

State park officials have strengthened patrols and deployed additional drones to scour the waters for potential hazard following a wave of attacks last year. “We did have a season last year where we had six swimmers bitten by sharks, so this has turned into a bit of a concern,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told WABC. The occurrences on Tuesday were spread out over a distance of roughly 95 kilometres, including one off Fire Island Pines, which was close to the scene of a different attack the day before in which a 15-year-old surfer claimed a shark bit him on one of his feet while surfing. An alleged shark bite to the leg was treated on Monday for another 15-year-old girl. “She didn’t see what bit her, the lifeguards didn’t know what bit her, the drone operator checked the area, and we didn’t see,” said Gorman. Therefore, we are unable to say for sure what bit her. Both of Tuesday’s shark encounters happened just before 2:00 p.m.

Swimmers on High Alert as Shark Bites Reported at New York Beaches

An apparent bite to his right knee was felt by a 47-year-old male in chest-deep water off Quogue Village Beach in the Hamptons, according to Quogue police. He admitted to not seeing a shark to the authorities. Swimmers were cautioned by Quogue police to avoid the water until authorities could evaluate the risks. Soon after, a 49-year-old man reported having his hand bit while swimming close to Fire Island Pines Beach, some distance away. Holiday goers continued to hang out on the beach despite the attacks. “That’s nature and maybe we are taking over their domain and they don’t like it,” 90-year-old Diana Fratello told WCBS.
