Sri Lanka’s Jaffna University refused to sign MOU with China – citing Beijing’s hidden agenda of grabbing land

Everyone in the world has now become wary of China’s hidden conspiracy of grabbing land most covertly. China’s expansionist plot is not new to Sri Lanka as the port of Hambantota was illegitimately taken away – The port was signed over to Beijing on a 99-year lease because Sri Lanka could not repay the Chinese loans it took out to build the port in the first place. The refusal of Jaffna University to toe Chinese lines has come as a shock and angered the Beijing administration.

The political relationship between China and Sri Lanka is ought to be strained as Jaffna University refused to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with China’s State Agricultural University citing apprehensions of a possible hidden agenda of Beijing to grab lands illegitimately.

Vice Chancellor of Jaffna University showed the grit and refused to sign MOU with China

The Vice-Chancellor of Jaffna University Sivakolondu Srisatkunarajah refused to sign the MOU with China as he claimed that the Chinese hidden agenda of grabbing land on the pretext of development projects is an open secret. Meanwhile, the Students of the University appreciated their Vice-Chancellor’s grit to refuse to sign the MOU.

China has grabbed Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Port with its shrewd lending conspiracies

The misleading MOU could have grabbed large chunks of sea areas under the ploy of promoting sea cucumber farms and created divisions among fishermen. As it is their wont, a shrewd practice to entice small economies into their debt trap – China assured many under-developed countries with developmental projects for the improvement of their infrastructural avenues, subsequently mortgaged large tracts of their lands, and with dubious interest rates and repayment schedules and they took control of the entire area – Hambantota Port is a classic example on which China has taken total control for 99 years.

Although India and Japan have supported Sri Lanka’s IMF bail-out processes, China has persistently tried to derail the proceedings with its malevolent intentions. The Chinese game plan of illegitimate expansion is evidently visible to all in Sri Lanka and the apprehensions are genuine in nature.
