Taliban: The Taliban on Tuesday publicly flogged nine men and cut off the hands of four at Ahmad Shahi Stadium in Kandahar in front of a large crowd. The men were accused of theft and other crimes.
A news report said, “The Supreme Court said in a statement that nine people were punished in Ahmad Shahi Stadium in Kandahar on Tuesday on charges of robbery and ‘sodomy'”. A spokesman for the governor’s office, Haji Zaid said nine men were flogged at the football stadium. He said the convicts were lashed 35-39 times.
People watch the punishment
Large number of Taliban officials, religious clerics, elders, and local people were present at the stadium to witness the public punishment.
Pictures from the incident showed nine people sitting on the grass waiting for their punishment.
Meanwhile, Human rights advocate and former Policy Advisor to Minister for Afghan Resettlement & Minister for Refugees, Shabnam Nasimi, shared a picture. It showed men sitting in a stadium with Taliban officials as spectators.
‘Hands chopped off’
“The Taliban have reportedly cut off the hands of 4 people in a football stadium in Kandahar today, accused of theft, in front of spectators. People are being lashed, amputated & executed in Afghanistan, without fair trial and due process. This is a human rights violation,” she tweeted.
Afghan journalist Tajuden Soroush shared a picture of the scene outside the stadium on Twitter and said, “It’s all just history repeating itself. Like 1990s Taliban began public punishment.”
The Taliban, in December, executed a man convicted of killing another man. It was the first public execution since the Taliban returned to power.
The execution was carried out with an assault rifle by the victim’s father in western Farah province as hundreds of spectators and many top Taliban officials watched.
UN experts have condemned flogging as punishment and called on Taliban to immediately halt all forms of severe punishments.
“We are additionally raising doubts about the fairness of the trials preceding these punishments, which appear not to satisfy basic fair trial guarantees. International human rights law prohibits the implementation of such cruel sentences, especially the death penalty, following trials that apparently do not offer the required fair trial guarantees,” experts said in a statement.
