Justin Trudeau: In response to US President Donald Trump's announcement of tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Canadian acting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared a strong retaliatory move. Canada will impose 25% tariffs on American goods worth $155 billion, with immediate tariffs on $30 billion of goods starting Tuesday, followed by additional tariffs on $125 billion in the next 21 days to allow Canadian companies time to find alternatives.
Trudeau Warns of Economic Consequences
Addressing Americans directly, Trudeau emphasized that these tariffs would not only harm Canadians but also have serious repercussions for American workers and industries.
"Tariffs against Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities," Trudeau warned. He further highlighted that these tariffs violate the Free Trade Agreement that Canada, the US, and Mexico had negotiated and signed.
Call for Cooperation Instead of Confrontation
Trudeau urged the US administration to reconsider its approach, quoting former US President John F. Kennedy to reinforce the long-standing partnership between the two nations:
"Geography has made us neighbours, history has made us friends, economics has made us partners, and necessity has made us allies."
He stressed that if President Trump aims to usher in a "new golden age" for the US, it would be far more beneficial to partner with Canada rather than impose punitive trade measures.
Escalating Trade Tensions
This marks a significant escalation in trade tensions between the two nations. With both countries imposing tariffs, concerns are rising over the impact on industries, jobs, and economic stability across North America. The coming weeks will be crucial as businesses and governments navigate the unfolding trade dispute.
