Tarique Rahman: The landslide victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) alliance, led by Tarique Rahman, is likely to redefine the ties with India, Pakistan and China. BNP won 211 out of 299 seats in the 13th national elections and Bangladesh is now likely to win over India to get its shattered economy reclaim its lost touch.

In recent months, Bangladesh has seen many instances of atrocities against the minorities, especially the Hindus. Islamic radicalists lynched, raped and murdered many Hindus. Several months of drift and mutual distrust would be hard to let go but Tarique Rahman is likely to make the first move to win over PM Narendra Modi.

Tarique Rahman-The Return Of BNP To Power

Rahman contested from Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17 seats and won both, making a powerful comeback after spending nearly 17 years in the United Kingdom. His return to national politics in December 2025 was greeted with massive rallies in the favour of BNP.

Would India Follow A Cautious Outreach?

In August 2024, the relations between India and Bangladesh entered a rough patch after the downfall of Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League party. Rahman openly criticized the perceived backing of Hasina, arguing that the stance of Delhi had alienated ordinary Bangladeshis from India.

Signs Of Recalibration

In a letter sent by PM Narendra Modi to Tarique Rahman after the death of his mother Khaleda Zia, signs of recalibration showed up. PM Modi expressed his willingness to working with Tarique Rahman, possibly hinting at a diplomatic reset. That intent is now likely to be reinforced. After the staggering win of BNP, Modi congratulated Tarique, emphasizing upon the relentless commitment of India to a progressive, democratic and inclusive Bangladesh.

Interestingly, the pitch of Rahman has been a Bangladesh-first foreign policy and avoids being seen as an ally of either Delhi or Rawalpindi. However, Bangladesh would require the support of India to get its shattered economy back on the track. But, this would not work well with Pakistan and China that have been trying to woo Bangladesh with their antics.
