Those vandalising Durga Puja pandals will be hunted down: Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said those behind vandalising Durga Puja pandal and Hindu temples in Cumilla will be haunted down to hand out appropriate punishments to them to stop the reoccurence of such communal act.

“The incidents in Cumilla are being thoroughly investigated. Nobody will be spared. It doesn’t matter which religion they belong to. They will be hunted down and punished,” she said while exchanging greetings with members of the Hindu community during an event at Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka on the occasion of Durga Puja.

Terming the incident of vandalising temple in Cumilla “very unfortunate” she said that those who are unable to earn the confidence and trust of the people and have no ideology can carry out such attack.

“We are getting a large amount of information we will definitely trace those who carried out the attack. This is the age of technology,” she added.

Temples and pandals attacked in Bangladesh on Durga Puja

At least four persons were killed in violence after some Hindu temples in Bangladesh were vandalised by unidentified Muslim fringes during Durga Puja celebrations, prompting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to deploy paramilitary force in 22 districts on Thursday and promise to bring to justice the culprits behind the incident.

Earlier in Cumilia, at least 50 people were left injured as a group of hardliners clashed with the police in the Nanua Dighirpar area after rumours of a communal incident surfaced. The attackers reached in big numbers at the Mandap area around 9 AM after a video went viral on social media. Eventually, the situation was brought under control by law enforcement agencies that arrived at the spot.
