An American tourist fell into the crater of the infamous Mount Vesuvius in Italy while taking a selfie on Saturday. The 23-year-old tourist was visiting the famed 4,000-foot volcano with his family and decided to take a selfie to mark the occasion. While taking the photo, his phone fell, and in an effort to retrieve it, he tripped and fell into the infamous volcano.
According to Italian media, the family took an unsafe trail that was forbidden. The man survives
The man survived and has been identified as Philip Carroll.
When the man and his family reached the top of the 4,000-foot-high volcano, they decided to celebrate the occasion by clicking a selfie.
When local guides saw Carroll’s descent into the crater, they rushed to the scene, climbing down the steep cliff to save the tourist. The police also arrived at the scene and deployed a helicopter to help in the rescue operation.
"This morning a tourist for reasons still to be determined...together with his family they ventured on a forbidden path, arrived on the edge of the crater, and fell into the mouth of #Vesuvius," Gennaro Lametta, a government tourism official, said on Facebook, according to Google translation of the post in Italian.
Carroll has sustained minor injuries on his arms and back but seems to be alright.
The injured man and his family have been charged by the local police for invasion of public land, said a report. The group, which reportedly ventured to the volcano without any tickets, took a path that was clearly signposted as being forbidden due to being extremely dangerous, it added.
