Turkey – Syria Earthquake 2023: A devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday resulted in more than 21,000 fatalities and many more injuries. Despite round-the-clock rescue efforts, harsh weather conditions are making the situation even more challenging for survivors. Several stories of survival are circulating on the internet, painting a clearer picture of the dire circumstances in the affected areas.

How did the boy manage to survive?
One such tale is of a 17-year-old boy who was rescued from the rubble and shared that he had to resort to drinking his own urine to stay alive. The teenager was trapped in the debris for approximately 94 hours. He spoke to the media through FaceTime from a hospital in Gaziantep, Turkey and described how he was asleep in his family’s home when the earthquake struck, and quickly assumed a fetal position.
He stated that in order to survive, he drank his own urine and ate flowers from his family’s garden. He also set his phone’s alarm to go off every 25 minutes to keep himself awake, but the battery died after two days.
The boy stated that he could hear voices as rescue efforts were underway, but was worried that rescuers couldn’t hear him. He expressed concerns about being trampled during the rescue operations, but was eventually saved after a wait of four days. He expressed gratitude to the rescuers who saved him, saying “Thank you to the people who came and saved me.”

Two-year old baby rescued
Another rescue that was captured on video by Turkey’s Humanitarian Relief Foundation, showed a two-year-old boy being pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building in the southern city of Antakya after being trapped for 79 hours. He was handed over to health workers, tearful and in distress.
