Uganda approves harsh penalties including death for LGBTQs

Uganda LGBTQs: A Reuters report filed from Kampala, Uganda says President Yoweri Museveni has signed a law that prescribes harsh penalties for LGBTQs. Homosexuals indulging in sex can be awarded the death penalty, per the new law. However, the death penalty would be awarded to repeat offenders.
Uganda already has strict anti-LGBTQ laws but the Church has been opposing them and wants the country to legalize homosexuality and other “deviant behaviour”.
The new law signed by President Museveni prescribes a 20-year jail term for those who promote homosexuality. It also criminalises the transmission of HIV/AIDS by the death penalty.
Museveni had received a revised bill on anti-LGBTQ laws in March. However, he sent it back to Parliament asking it to tone down some of its harsh provisions. Nevertheless, there was no doubt that the President would sign this bill into law.

Reprisals follow

The United States has condemned this law and termed the move as a “tragic violation of human rights”. President Joe Biden said he would consider imposing sanctions on Uganda and banning all the people suspected of committing human rights violations and corruption.
In another development, the US Government cancelled the visa of the Ugandan Speaker.
Many human rights organizations have also condemned this law. The Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS and PEPFAR said the Ugandan law put the fight against AIDS “in jeopardy”.

Kenya and Tanzania to follow

Reuters also reports that Kenya and Tanzania may follow Uganda in implementing tough anti-LGBTQ laws.
“What a leader we’ve in Africa!”, said Kenyan MP George Kaluma in a tweet on May 29. Kaluma submitted an anti-LGBTQ bill to the Kenyan Parliament in April this year. The Kenyan lawmaker also said that his country is following Museveni to save the humanity.
