Uganda says 54 soldiers killed by Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia

Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda, announced on Saturday that a military base in Somalia was attacked by the militant group Al Shabaab last week, resulting in the deaths of 54 Ugandan peacekeepers.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), according to Museveni, have since retaken the base from the Islamist organisation.

“Our soldiers demonstrated remarkable resilience and reorganized themselves, resulting in the recapture of the base by Tuesday,” the president said.

Fighters for Al Shabaab had struck the base in Bulamarer, 130 kilometres (80 miles) southwest of the capital Mogadishu, early on Friday.

Although Museveni stated last week that there had been losses among Ugandans, he did not provide any additional information regarding the attack on the troops, who are part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Al Shabaab has been fighting since 2006 to overthrow Somalia’s Western-backed government with its own system based on a strict application of Islamic law. The group has claimed responsibility for suicide bomb assaults that resulted in the deaths of 137 troops at the base.
