UK bans installation of made-in-China cameras in government buildings due to security concerns

UK: The UK government has ordered its various departments not to erect security cameras at its buildings that were made in China. This is in response to reports of security dangers posed by Chinese businesses as part of Beijing’s cyber strategy.

UK minister Oliver Dowden explains the necessity of this major step

In a written statement to parliament, UK minister Oliver Dowden stated that the choice had been made after considering “current and future possible security risks associated with the installation of visual surveillance systems on the government estate.”

Oliver Dowden remarked, “The review has concluded that, in light of the threat to the UK and the increasing capability and connectivity of these systems, additional controls are required.”

The review submitted by Dowden stated, as per Sky News, “Departments have therefore been instructed to cease deployment of such equipment onto sensitive sites, where it is produced by companies subject to the National Intelligence Law of the People’s Republic of China.”

Security considerations are always paramount

The statement added, “Since security considerations are always paramount around these sites, we are taking action now to prevent any security risks materialising.”

Additionally, all current Chinese-made cameras will be promptly removed from government buildings, and departments have been told to unplug them from all systems.

A similar restriction was previously in place in the US because government organisations were told not to utilise any cameras manufactured by Hikvision, Dahua, or other Chinese companies.
