UK PM Election: In the UK, two Prime Ministers, two Home Secretaries, and two Finance Ministers have come and gone in a span of three years. With Liz Truss' resignation as leader of the Conservative party following controversy over her mini-budget, Britain is experiencing a number of firsts. George Canning, who served as prime minister for nearly four months in 1827, was surpassed by her as the British leader with the shortest tenure as prime minister (45 days).
If speculators have their way and Rishi Sunak-related sources are to be believed, the Indian-origin MP already has the support of more than 100 MPs, the necessary number to be recognised as a contender for the position of Tory party leader and, consequently, the PM.
The next leader will be picked prior to the financial statement on October 31, according to Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 committee that establishes the rules for the Conservative party. Considering the market sensitivity that plunged after Liz Truss's big tax cuts, this is a critical move. The announcement of her resignation as Prime Minister caused the pound to crash at the time, and it has only just appeared to rebound.
The decision to nominate the next leader of the Tory party, which won a resounding victory in the most recent general election under Boris Johnson's leadership, is still up to them. A general election is being demanded by the Labour Party and a few other regional parties.
Unless the ruling party is unable to form a government, which is not the situation at the moment, that cannot be automatically called.

Now what's up next?
Nominations are currently being accepted and will stay open through Monday, October 24 at 2:00 p.m. To be eligible to run for Prime Minister, a candidate must receive the support of at least 100 MPs. Three candidates may submit nominations because there are 357 Tory MPs in the House of Commons.
On October 24, between 3:30 and 5:30 pm, the first round of voting for MPs will take place. The results will be announced at 6:00 pm on the same day.
If a second indicative vote is necessary, it will be held at 6:30 pm so that party members may learn which of the final two candidates is preferred by MPs. By 9:00 p.m. on the same day, the outcome of this indicative vote will be announced.
There is a chance that the two surviving contenders may come to an agreement regarding who would serve as prime minister. In the event that this does not occur, Tory party members will use a safe online voting platform to cast their ballots. On October 28, voting will end at 11 p.m., and the outcome will be made public that evening. By October 28, the UK will most likely have a new Prime Minister.

Contenders in the race
Penny Mordant, who finished third in the previous leadership campaign, may run as the second candidate, with Rishi Sunak standing as the first. Before losing to Liz Truss the first time around, Sunak, 42, was feeling good about his 'Ready for Rishi' leadership campaign.

After the Conservative party crisis, Boris Johnson, who was on vacation in the Caribbean, is flying down. If he receives the support of 100 MPs, he might be the third contender for the position of premier. Even after his abrupt resignation due to controversies, Boris Johnson continues to have the backing of some Tory MPs. The major challenge for Rishi Sunak will be persuading the MPs to endorse Johnson.
In addition to Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson, Penny Mordant is a formidable candidate who is unburdened by any past issues. She has a new look, a clean slate, and a solid recent history.
Once the Conservative party elects its new leader in the next weeks, it will be obvious whether Boris will make a comeback or whether Britain is finally "ready for Rishi."
