UK: After growing claims that he intimidated coworkers, a top official in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's cabinet tendered his resignation on Tuesday night.

Four days after the Times of London released profanity-filled text conversations he sent to another member of Parliament, Gavin Williamson announced his resignation as minister of state without portfolio in a letter shared on Twitter.

After that, a senior civil servant claimed Williamson had been tormenting them for a while, asking them to "slit your throat" once and "jump out of the window" the next.
Williamson wrote in his resignation letter that he had apologised for the text messages and was helping with the inquiry into his actions. However, he denied claims that bullying was involved in the second instance.

Williamson wrote, “I refute the characterization of these claims, but I recognize these are becoming a distraction for the good work this government is doing for the British people.I have therefore decided to step back from government so that I can comply fully with the complaints process that is underway and clear my name of any wrongdoing.”

Williamson's resignation follows allegations that Sunak has fallen short of keeping his promise to make integrity a top priority for his administration. Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, has also come under fire from opposition leaders for being reinstated just six days after she quit due to misconduct.

New British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak

Liz Truss, his predecessor, was forced to resign when her budget proposals caused economic unrest, and Sunak assumed office two weeks ago. Truss took over as prime minister when Boris Johnson resigned following a slew of controversies, including claims of unethical use of political funds and unlawful parties held during pandemic lockdowns. Johnson served as prime minister for barely six weeks.

Williamson was twice thrown out of Cabinet positions, so many onlookers were shocked when Sunak selected him to a role in his cabinet. Following a leak of private information from the National Security Council, Williamson announced his resignation as defence secretary in 2019. After the pandemic-related disruption of the standardised tests in 2021 cost him his position as education secretary, he was fired.
