Ukraine war: Thousands rendered homeless, risk disease from flooding; Zelenskey says situation catastrophic

Kherson

Ukraine war: Tens of thousands of Ukrainians became homeless as they abandoned their flooded homes on Wednesday. Floods crested across the south a huge hydroelectric dam on front lines was destroyed following a clash between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

Residents in the occupied parts of the Kherson region slogged through flooded streets carrying children on their shoulders, pets in their arms and belongings in plastic bags. Rescuers used rubber boats to search areas where the waters reached above head height, reported agencies.

The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant is in the city of Nova Kakhovka in the Kherson region. The city is currently under Russian occupation. Video footage showed a massive breach in the dam, with water surging through it and flooding downstream in the direction of Kherson.

Sources said said the Nova Kakhovka station was “fully destroyed” and could not be restored.

No drinking water

Even as the presidents of both countries blame each other for the disaster, Ukraine said the flood would leave hundreds of thousands of people without access to drinking water, swamp tens of thousands of hectares of agricultural land and turn at least 500,000 hectares deprived of irrigation into “deserts”.

In yet another video address, the Ukrainian President Zelenskey said that it was impossible to predict how many people would die in Russian-occupied areas due to the flooding. He urged a “clear and rapid reaction from the world” to support victims.

‘Situation absolutely catastrophic’

“The situation in occupied parts of the Kherson region is absolutely catastrophic. The occupiers are simply abandoning people in frightful conditions. No help, without water, left on the roofs of houses in submerged communities,” he said.
