US China Trade War: The tension between the US and China has taken a new turn with Washington’s latest move. A White House fact sheet revealed that a new tariff of up to 245% could now be imposed on Chinese exports. This marks a sharp rise from the previous 145% tariff, intensifying the already strained trade relations. In response, China has cautiously reacted, signalling its readiness to defend its interests while calling for clarification on the specific details of the new tariffs.
Beijing Responds to 245% Tariff in US China Trade War
China's response to the fresh tariff hike was cautious and somewhat vague. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian avoided confirming the exact figure. Instead, he suggested that the US should clarify the "specific tax rate figures." However, he did remind everyone that the US China trade war began with America’s actions, not China’s.
He emphasised that China had only taken countermeasures to protect its rights. “Trade wars have no winners,” Lin stated. “China doesn’t want a war but is not afraid of one.” His comments underline China’s firm stance and readiness to act if necessary.
Donald Trump’s Aggressive Tariff Moves Continue
The recent hike in tariffs is part of Donald Trump’s broader trade policy, which includes levies on several countries to reduce the US trade deficit. Although Trump has paused tariffs for 90 days with over 75 nations for negotiation talks, China has been left out of this pause. According to the White House, Beijing’s retaliatory attitude is the main reason.
Will Beijing Bend or Stand Firm?
Despite rising pressure, Beijing remains calm but firm. Lin highlighted China’s commitment to cooperation in uncertain times. “We prefer to join hands, not throw punches,” he wrote on X. The message was clear — China favours diplomacy over conflict.
As the US China trade war deepens, all eyes are now on Beijing. Whether China responds with new countermeasures or agrees to return to the table for talks remains to be seen. But for now, Donald Trump’s 245% tariff has certainly raised the stakes.
